SUUM CUIQUE / to each his own is a video art piece which Franz Wassermann created based on talks with people who fled to Austria and are illegalized and deported by the Austrian authorities. To protect these people the video reveals only their eyes, which mirror pain, sadness, traumata, joy and dreams. The German subtitles twist reasons for migration into reasons for deportation. The title SUUM CUIQUE means “to each his / her own”. This Roman principle of law was originally created by Emperor Justinian asking people to live honourably, not to harm each other and to grant everyone his / her own. In 1938 the meaning of the phrase was perverted as the National Socialists displayed it on the entry of concentration camp Buchenwald.
