Concept

In ICONS, Franz Wassermann challenges art in its dependence on the art market. Therefore, he buys pieces of artists who have been declared icons of modern and contemporary art e.g. Angelica Kauffmann, Joseph Beuys and Arnulf Rainer. Wassermann sinks these artworks in Plexiglas containers where they decompose and vanish bit by bit. When questioning value and valuation in the art field, Wassermann includes his own artistic practice; he also sinks one of his own pieces: FISHSTENCIL from 1990.
