SUUM CUIQUE / to each his own, Ferdinandeum, 2018
“When working with refugees, the question arose for me as an artist as to how a work of art can do justice to these people and their stories. As many of the participants were illegalized in Austria or had to wait for a decision on their residence status, it was important to ensure anonymity so as not to put these people in danger. So I decided to show the video without sound and only make the eyes of the refugees visible. In this way, mechanisms of nationality and voyeurism are eliminated; the language of the eyes is universal, encounters can take place through the eyes.
can take place. It was particularly important to me to show the video work SUUM CUIQUE / to each his own not only in the Ferdinandeum, but also on the façade of the museum in order to make the situation of people on the run visible in public space and to confront the Tyrolean population with their reality.
My special thanks go to the 20 refugees who made it possible for me to realize the project. Many thanks also to Helena Pereña and her team at the Ferdinandeum, Frauke Schacht, Holger Fankhauser and the FLUCHTpunkt (more information: FLUCHTpunkt-Info Nr. 16, 2018) as well as my colleagues who were involved in the project.” Franz Wassermann
